Somewhere Beyond the Sun

The Universe is incomprehensible in its vastness.

It tends to be the case that as we discover more about it, our sum of scientific knowledge seems less like a grand edifice of order standing against the darkness of unknown and more like the strands of a spider’s web suspended over an abyss - fragile, effervescent, and all too prone to disruption.

From black holes to dark energy, from the hordes of dimly-lit planetoids at the margins of our own backyard to the faint smudges of galaxies billions of light-years away, there is yet so much the darkness still hides. Well over 90% of the Universe’s present volume is forever unreachable - the golden years of Cosmic High Noon, for instance, have and forever will be walled away by the tyranny of light-speed expansion.

So what may lie in that infinite darkness? We will never truly know, but our observations permit at least a glimpse into what may be. Our fantasies of alien civilizations and grand intergalactic explorations may remain in that realm of fantasy, but even the squarely impossible may still inform us as to the limits of the possible.

A new world rises in the dark.

Welcome to Horizon. We hope you enjoy your stay.
